A Play about the 5 C’s

The Catchin’ the five C’s is a 1/2 hour educational play inspired by superintendent Dr. John Puglisi focusing around the five C’s which consist of communication, collaboration, caring, critical thinking and creativity.

Explore durability of buildings during earthquakes

Studying plate tectonics and earthquakes, students are challenged to work as teams to create the tallest building to withstand a large magnitude earthquake simulation. Teams compete in class competitions as well as grade level competitions.

Teach kids to fail and use grit

It is important to teach kids to fail and use grit to work through their problems. The challenges that the kids do every Friday are designed to be difficult and to make them fail at first and have them try numerous times to complete the challenge.

Building Community Relationships

The event was highlighted with mini workshops for parents and community members. The workshops covered an array of themes including: Empowering Youth, Empowering Parents, Pathways to Success, Family Safety, Positive Parenting, Self Care and Early Childhood.

Learn and share about local historical artifacts

Students in the Rio School District are learning to be researchers, harvesting artifacts, conducting family oral history interviews, and engaging with community leaders about their history.

Learning about our solar system

Our Solar System has eight planets in order of distance from the sun they are; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

School Garden an extension of the Classroom

The Learning Garden is a model example of how a school garden can transform the lives of students and teachers and the environment of their community. The Learning Garden is much more than a garden.

Being film and media literate in the 21st century is vital

Film education in schools is increasing pupil engagement, inspiring writing, improving literacy attainment and improving behaviour.Just like books, movies allow students insight into the lives of different characters, how their perspective differs and how they handle certain situations. Films can show students how different people, in different parts of the world, live their lives.

STEAM can help make good education better

Our goal is to share tools for integrating STEAM framework into all Common Core subjects to engage all students in authentic learning experiences in every classroom.

Culture, History, and Mathematics

The Mixtec Game of Kasia: Culture, History, and Mathematics in the Rio School District. Since 2013, students and teachers have been learning about and playing an ancient Mixtec game called “Kasia.”

Learning about your Local River

The River Literacy Project is an online, Transdisciplinary, Inquiry-based learning project designed to connect children, teachers, classrooms, schools, and communities from around the world. The basic design idea for the project involves students and teachers around the world in learning and sharing their learnings related to their local rivers.

VC Student Gaming Challenge

Coding is being taught throughout the county by creative teachers. We want to provide a way of bringing out the best student coders in our area and get some local High Tech businesses to take notice of the creative processes happening in our county.
